McKinney, a rapidly growing city in North Texas, has launched a major $79 million expansion at McKinney National Airport, aiming to introduce commercial airline service by 2026. The city, located about 35 miles north of Dallas and experiencing a 17% population surge since 2020, broke ground on a new 46,000-square-foot terminal. This facility will feature four gates (expandable to six), food and beverage offerings, a 980-space parking lot, rental car facilities, and a deicing area, with the capacity to serve approximately 200,000 passengers annually.
“This new terminal is not just an investment in McKinney, it’s an investment in the future of North Texas,” said Mayor Bill Cox, emphasizing the project’s regional impact and long-term vision.
The expansion is funded through a combination of sales tax revenue bonds, tax revenue from the airport area, and other city funds, after residents previously voted down a larger bond proposal. While some locals have voiced concerns about potential increases in traffic and noise, city leaders and airport officials remain focused on the community and economic benefits.
“Today is a very good day for McKinney National Airport as we officially begin the transition from a successful general aviation operation to a commercial service airport,” noted Airport Director Ken Carley.
The city has been in discussions with national airlines since 2019, with hopes that commercial flights will begin as soon as the terminal opens. The project reflects McKinney’s ongoing growth and its efforts to increase regional connectivity and economic opportunities.
